Here's one from me. I hope you enjoy it. OK, so I get a little cocky sometimes with my "I can catch a fish out of your bathtub" attitude. But hey, I will admit I DON"T have ESP, refer to or qualify myself as an "expert" on fishing tactics, or even think that I know anything for sure about fishing. (The fish taught me that one). But what I DO have is common sense, and a knack for offering the fish WHAT they want.
We are all animals on this tiny water covered planet, and we all have the same basic need, Sustenance. Oxygen, Food, and water are a necessity of every animals existence. Since we cannot expect to catch a fish using oxygen or water (tried it once.. don't bother, the water that get's on your hook washes off the flavored water you put on it). We turn to food as an enticement for the fish to impale itself.
Herein lies one of the problems. Keeping fishing buddies coming back around when it looks to them you are a fishing god.
Ok, like a lot (read every) fisherman out there, I HAVE A BIG MOUTH. And I have got a BUNCH of tall fish tales.
OK, there have been a couple of times when I couldn't believe the pile of malarkey that was coming out of it, but, I have never been afraid to back it up. Afraid I couldn't, yeah once or twice. But none the less, not afraid of backing it up.
I can assure you that with enough days on the water and enough fishing buddies around you, you WILL be able to draw upon a number of times that realism doesn't reside on the water that day, and cool weird stuff that doesn't ever happen, happens.
I had a buddy once. We'll call him Paul. Because that was his name, and he wasn't so innocent, so we needn't protect him. I think I might have lost him as a fishing buddy because of that 9 foot rattlesnake, but, maybe not.
So there we were at a local urban pond, and I of course, was telling some story about fishing that ended up with me bragging that I could catch a fish with any kind of bait. ANY KIND OF BAIT. I am fairly sure I left out the "when the conditions are right" part.
So being the concerned and helpful friend he was, he pulls out a jalapeno from our Kentucky Fried Chicken bag. A jalapeno, figures. Crap, here we go again.... So there I was, cutting up this jalapeno so I could put it on a hook. Under Paul's watchful eye I threaded it onto a small Aberdeen hook. Knowing that it HAD to be a small piece, because fish don't eat BIG pieces of jalapeno right? Well, I baited my hook with my new Mexican style rig and tossed it out to the center of the pond. Then WHAM!, the second the jalapeno hit the water, a big ole bluegill nailed it! I pulled him in, all the time looking at the absolute stunned look on Paul's face. Hey, I was happy, the bluegill was huge for the lake we were at. Paul? Not so happy he owed me five bucks and wanted to go home. It was the last time we fished together. Maybe I shouldn't have done the victory dance.
On the way home he reminded me of the time at Lake Mead a couple of years before, when I was teaching him to fish with plastic worms. I kept telling him to toss the worm under a specific branch near the shore. "Right under that branch over there, on the shady side, about 4 inches from the trunk." Try as he may for thirty or forty casts, a good twenty minutes, he could not put that big ole 10 inch red shad colored worm anywhere near the spot. He kept saying "There isn't a fish there", and "that HAS to be close enough", sometimes "I am putting it right where you said". Finally out of exasperation he handed me the pole and said "Here, show me!" Of course. First cast. Right where I told him to put it. She came out of the water so hard, she wrapped herself over the hanging branch and tangled up in some others. I should have seen it coming... after we landed and released her he looked at me and said "It's time to go home".
Just a note here. I do a lot of fishing and I have introduced a lot of people to salt water fishing and I had someone that used to say ,"Well I didn't catch $45 worth of fish!" when we went fishing on a party boat and it took me a bunch of times taking him fishing with me before he finally "Got IT" and realized that it isn't about how much fish you catch but the whole experience.Being on the boat and being away from all of the everyday baloney(the phone, the bills, the traffic and the BS of ordinary life) I used to tell him if you want to be sure of catching $45 worth of fish then go to the supermarket and have the guy at the seafood counter wrap up $45 worth of fish and have him throw it over the counter to you!!!As we all know it just isn't the same at all !! We should remember to SAVOR each day as it comes and as it unfolds and try to remember that somewhere there is someone that isn't as lucky as we are to be living in a country where you can go fishing and not have to pay for the privilege of just using a body of water to wet a line like they have to do in England. Nuff Said. TIght lines everybody.take what you eat and eat what you keep and remember to leave some for next time. AJ Perras the NHCodfather

I just wanted to let you all know that I love hearing the stories of
fishing sucess and those days that are not so sucessful. To me the
most important part of fishing is not so much catching the fish as
it is being able to sit by a lake shore or a river bank and not have
to worry about the everyday stress of life, if only for a few
moments. To be a part of this pleasure goes beyond words and will
always be a very large part of my life and the lives of those that
surround me.
Thank you all for participating in this small but very significant
group. The tales we tell and share with each other will be held in
the memories of us all as we age to the point of having nothing left
but our memories.
I recently lost a good friend whom I had not know for very long,
but in the short time that I did know him he helped me to understand
the value of life and all it has to offer. He was a very sick man
and could not walk more than a few feet at a time but he refused to
go to the wheel chair. The last time I was with him we went fishing
with his son to the river where we caught striped bass. It was a
cold and windy day and Pops, which is what we all called him, needed
extra time to get to where he sat in his folding chair to fish. He
did not stay long because his cirrulation was very bad and he got
cold way to fast. I told him that I was sorry he did not catch a
fish and he told me that it did not matter because he was able to
spend one mroe day with his son doing what he loved the best. Well I
am here to tell you the tears welled up in my eyes and I had to turn
away but it reminded me of what was really important about fishing
and it is just being able to be. Sorry I have something in my eye
and I have to stop tying for now because I can't see the keys any
more.
Tight lines to you all,
Dale
I went out to the Tusc river here around 4 pm to do
alittle channel cat fishing. Dad was late arriving, so i decided to
toss around my new Cordell Wiggle O crankbait (firetiger green print)
and try for a saugeye or two. a saugeye for those of you who dont
know is a hybrid fish a mix between a walleye and sauger. They are
excellent eating !!! The leaves are terrible in the river here right
now (I was picking leaves off of my treble hooks every cast), I did
however manage to catch one nice saugeye around 19 inches in the 20
minutes i fished and picked leaves. LOL. Well dad showed up around
4:30 and we set up our rods in the rod holders and settled down for
some cattin. We were using chicken livers on bottom rigs, the fishing
was slow. I had 5 runs between 4:30 and 8 o clock when we left, dad
didnt have a bite at all. I managed to catch one nice 6 lb channel
cat that was 26 inches long and missed all of my other bites. I was
using 4/0 gamakatsu circle hooks and the fish were running hard
making the clickers go off and i was letting them load up the rod
good and starting cranking slow and steady as I usually do which
always works well and I just wasnt hooking up.

My 12 tear old son and I left for our favorite piece of paradise after he got
out of school last Thursday(I let him play hooky Friday). Perfect Fall
weather here in Southern Illinois. Kept a fire going quite a bit of the
time. Got to visit with some old friends and make some new ones down at
the boat house. Caught some good bluegill and crappie with our flyrods.
The highlight of the trip was Cody catching 10 good channel cats while
baitcasting at night. I've caught my share in my life and
I let him do the catching. He told me he was so excited he felt like
screaming like a little girl. LOL He took his catch down to the boathouse and
our friend Ernie(ex Navy cook, he and his wife Betty have invited me to
grub more than once ) took a Polaroid picture of Cody's fish and put it
up on the bulletin board. Got home Sunday afternoon. Wish we were there
now. Mike- Illinois
We fished the tusc tonight from 6:30 to 9:30 with my dad for catfish. we
were using creek chubs on bottom rigs hoping for some flatties. we
were using large chubs 5--8 inches long. dad started the night off
well at 7:00 when he hooked into a nice channel that weighed in at 4
lbs 8 oz. a short while later around 7:30 i had a strong run that was
ripping the clicker, hooked and landed my new personal best flathead
weighing in at 15 lbs 1 oz. i no sooner recast, when the clicker went
off again on the same reel and i caught a 4 lbs 6 oz channel cat.
around 8:00 i had another very hard run and hooked into a BIG
flattie, got him close to the bank and he wrapped me up in a root and
broke my 20 lb test ironsilk line. this fish was quite a bit bigger
then my 15 lber, i got a good look at him before he broke me off.
around 8:30 i had another good run and caught my 2nd flattie of the
night weighing in at 7 lbs 4 oz. until around 9:15 things were quiet
and i got another good run while i was taking a potty break and dad
caught his first ever flattie weighing in at 3 lbs. he is HOOKED
now , he couldnt believe how hard a flattie fights compared to a
channel cat. all in all we had a great time , lots of bites and
decent fish !! now im shooting for that 20 lber before winter gets
here.

Thanks for the vote of confidance; I'm not sure that I am all that great, but I do the best I can to be a good Father to Bobby, and to try to share with him the things I love and cherish in the world around us...and I am sure that that is just what Littletroubleat4AM is doing too! I've a hunch I know just where that "Little trouble at 4am" comes from and I've been there and done that too. I think that the best thing any father can do for his son is to do things together and to share the things he loves. Not just going fishing together; in all aspects of life I want to be there for him sharing, encouraging and guiding (when he will let me) ...sometimes he wants to be the leader...and then I get to see things through his eyes for awhile and that's great too.
I suppose that I might be selfish about "my" fishing time and sneak off and leave him someplace in order to maximize what I get out of it ; and, I'm not fool enough not to realize that I can be selfish even with him being with me, when I stay on after I know that he's probably had enough, or when I insist that we go when he thinks that he'd rather do something else (and there is no doubt more of that coming (LOL)...but we have sure done alright together; we've put up with each other pretty well, and we have both caught our share of fish too! I don't think I'd change it much if I could. Life's been real good; not just to this boy, but too this Daddy too.
