This year we'll try fishing Illipah again.
I'm planning an added trip to fish the Ice Fishing Derby on Saturday, stay the night at a hotel in Ely, then try to fish Sunday at Illipah Reservoir.
The trout have been coming out in the 6-10 lb range and since we're so close, we are going to give them another shot.
It's usually a fantastic, absolutely beautiful day on Saturday and everyone catches lots of fish.
Be sure to bring your camera as we get some great pictures and stories.
Limited to the first 500 anglers, the derby has a five fish limit with 10 tagged fish each worth $100.
One of those tagged fish will be worth $10,000.
Two of the last five derbys I have seen the Grand Prize fish caught. I haven't caught a tagged fish yet, but we do limit out every time. They are small stockies, but, the chance to win Ten Grand AND Fish is famtastic !
The club also decided last year to add another $500 prize awarded to one of the contestants of the derby, just for showing up and entering.
Well, that's too much to resist!
Both vehicles will leave Las Vegas at approximately 4am on Saturday morning.
One vehicle will leave to return to Las Vegas at the end of the derby at 3pm Saturday.
The other will continue on to Ely for dinner, drinks, and rest.
Sunday morning we'll meet at a designated time for breakfast and to get back out on the ice.
This time to fish for the big trout in Illipah Reservoir.

We are making plans to go to the derby again.
We will be taking 12 anglers to the Ely Rotary Club Ice Fishing Derby at Cave Lake.

Basically, the key word here is warmth.
You should bring blankets and chairs, your own gear (though tackle is provided).
Be sure to dress warm and in layers... we do not know how cold it will be.
From my experience in past years, it is usually VERY cold in the morning and warm in the afternoon!
Ski Pants or bibs, wool socks and hat, warm WATERPROOF boots, longjohns, and gloves are recommended.
