This year we tried something different again.
I planned the trip to fish the Ice Fishing Derby on Saturday, stay the night at a hotel in Ely then try to fish Sunday at Illipah Reservoir. The trout have been coming out in the 6-10 lb range and since we were so close, we were going to give them another shot.
It was a fantastic, absolutely beautiful day on Saturday and everyone caught lots of fish. The weather did not cooperate with a wild snowy windstorm on Sunday, but we got some great pictures and stories.
Limited to the first 500 anglers, the derby has a five fish limit with 10 tagged fish each worth $100. One of those tagged fish will be worth $10,000.
Two of the last five derbys I have seen the Grand Prize fish caught. I haven't caught a tagged fish yet, but we do limit out every time. They are small stockies, but the chance to win Ten Grand AND Fish!
The club also decided this year to add another $500 prize awarded to one of the contestants of the derby just for showing up and entering. Well that's too much to resist!
Both vehicles left Las Vegas at approximately 5am on Saturday morning. One vehicle returned to Las Vegas at the end of the derby at 3pm. The other continued on to Ely for for dinner and rest.
In the morning we met at a designated time to get back out on the ice. This time to fish Illipah Reservoir.

Basically, the key word here is warmth.
You may bring blankets and chairs, your own gear (though tackle is provided).
Be sure to dress warm and in layers... we do not know how cold it will be.
From my experience in past years, it is usually VERY cold!
Ski Pants or bibs, wool socks and hat, warm WATERPROOF boots, longjohns, and gloves are recommended.
